At Lucy Wagtail, handmade lampshades are our speciality! We can make light shades of all shapes and sizes in our workshop by the Caledonian Canal in Inverness, the heart of the Highlands of Scotland.
A wide choice is available including the ever-popular drum shape, oval, empire, french drum, coolie as well as gathered lampshades, pleated lamp shades and other soft bodied and traditional lampshades.
Some of our lampshades are made using refurbished frames which have been rescued from the impending doom of landfill!
We take these traditional lampshde frames and give them a new lease of life as one of a kind, unique and showstopping handmade lampshades.
We often take this opportunity to let our creative genie out of the bottle and come up with some quite off the wall results! Well, they’re nothing if not unique!
We also offer a re-vamp service where we can re-cover your frame. Great if you love the frame but the shade is just a little tired!
How We Make Our Handmade Lampshades
All our hard sided shades are made using a powder coated steel frame. They are made using the rolled edge method.
We have a range of linings to choose from to suit your decor:
The eco-friendly option includes a white board which can be recycled at the end of the lampshade’s life (if you don’t see this option in our shop listing, please ask.
Where fabrics are not inherently fire resistant such as wool, fabrics are treated with a fire retardant spray prior to making up. This is an extra layer of safety. We always recommend the use of low energy, LED bulbs.
PVC based Linings:
In favour of the more earth friendly eco friendly lampshade linings, we are reducing our use of PVC based linings . However, they are available in plain white, clear as well as several metallic options. The PVC based backing materials used in our lampshades have been tested in the Lighting Association Laboratories and has passed the glow wire test, complying with BS EN 60598-1-2008, which is The British Standard for Luminaries.
Handmade in our workshop in Inverness, in the Highlands of Scotland our shades are made with colour, texture and design in mind and using fabrics such as cotton, linen, velvet, silk and the iconic “Harris Tweed”.
